What a great new fantasy world! Brida is a fantastic heroine, thinking that she is not important and that her magic is inferior because she hasn't been able to pass the apprentice hedgewitch exams. As her journey unfolds and she learns to trust her instincts and her magic, she finds that she is much more powerful than she could have ever imagined. This is a must read for fantasy lovers. I hope there will be a sequel. Highly recommended for grades 4 & up.

I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

The Last Windwitch was an excellent story! I really enjoyed getting to know Brida and Mother Magdi and the whole world. The story was full of rich detail, exciting magic, and I LOVED the weather element with the storm horses. The book was suspenseful and wrapped up perfectly, and I couldn't put it down. I would highly recommend this to anyone interested in fantasy and middle grade, and I plan to keep a copy of this in my classroom library.

I really do like witch stories, as I've said before. This one is a perfect middle grade introduction to the huge world of high fantasy; the world building here is everything that a reader needs to be in the story without being so much as to become overwhelming. Brida is a lovely protagonist to go on the journey with, as are the supporting characters we meet (particularly fond of Mother Magdi and Burdock the pony, but that's just me).

Excellent for collections looking to include a broad range of fantasy, as well as for anyone who likes witch stories (or simply stories of magic).

This is exactly the kind of book little 12-year old me would have devoured and adored. It seems like it should be a typical high fantasy story, but its really the lovely, atmospheric writing and the simple-but-engaging world-building where it shines.

Okay, so the writing was really solid for a middle grade book, especially a debut! I didn’t even mind the main character that much, even though I don’t think she grew at all.

But my main gripe with this book and why I don’t think I’d recommend it is my sheer confusion surrounding the worldbuilding and the magic system. I don’t think it made sense at all and unfortunately that really hindered my enjoyment of the book. There was some many random magic elements and I was just so confused.

I also found the plot really predictable. From the beginning it was really obvious that the main character was special and related to the queen.

I’m definitely beyond the target age range though, so I’m sure kids would enjoy this and not have the same gripes I do.
