This was a very poignant, but informative read. Like many, I remember when this happened and how it played out in the media. The insight into the aftermath for the families is heartbreaking. While Sue is telling the story, you end up feeling the feelings of all involved. She told her story in a way that did not come across defensive or offensive to her son’s victims. No matter how much you could tell she wanted to, she never offered excuses for what he did. She is a mother who lost a child in more ways than one that day.

It’s definitely too bad that the majority of the people reading this are those already interested in the events of Columbine because there’s a lot of valuable information on depression and mental illness in general and how to notice it in your loved ones. I think parents in general would benefit a lot from this especially. There’s a lot of blame being assigned to the chemical imbalance in the brains of those with mental illnesses and while I don’t discount how that must play a part in us feeling that way, it would have been interesting to hear more about how our environments can also affect us and enhance those struggles.
Ultimately this was an interesting and helpful book, as well as really sad. It was hard to read about Dylan growing up like any normal kid would, and the kindness he displayed to his family and friends and holding that up against the horrible things he went on to do, all the while seeming like a fairly normal person. I really do feel for Sue and how blindsided she felt the whole time.
