These just keep getting better. Alex Verus is having to deal with the past, and the past is threatening both his present and future. No matter how much you want to forget something, your actions always have consequences, and those consequences may take years to appear. So when you're squeezed between difficult decisions, what do you do? How do you justify it? Who holds you accountable?
The strength in these books is the reality of the relationships. No Scooby Gang here, with unthinking loyalty no matter what: that's just not realistic. Sometimes people do something unforgiveable. Sometimes people cross a line. And sometimes we're just scared by what we see, especially if it reflects ourselves.

This was good! Just another Alex Verus book. I really enjoy them, and they're light, easy reading for me.

Initial Impressions 5/3/18: So I am really loving how each book has some different fantasy feels for me. Previous books had brief feels of Harry Potter, and HIDDEN actually had a sort of Magicians feel for me. I say that only because I'm loving the different overall feelings that the series is giving me, not because I think it should be compared to other series. I just love how the series is constantly growing, moving to different places, and looking at everything from a different angle. Sometimes it's the big bad villain, sometimes it's a mystery, sometimes it's a rescue mission, sometimes it's a competition, and pretty much all of the time it's running for your life. Each book really gets better and I love the layers that keep developing the more I read!
Enjoyable, interesting world building, but I get exhausted by the overly dramatic conversations and sort of magic-powers-manifesting-as-needed aspect of the series. I'll keep reading them but I can't handle them back to back.
The best in the series, I loved the Shadow Realm stuff. The author's habit of describing everything over and over in each book continued, and is the only thing I hate about the series. It would be like if JKR had described what Harry's wand, cloak and map was and what it did, in each book in the same ways. Other than that, damn good book. Gildart Jackson is a wonderful narrator.
