One of my favorite things about this series is that Alex always has to use his wits to figure his way out of scrapes and in this installment he does it but it didn't seem to have as much flair as I recall him having in the other books. I still had a great time reading this. We get a lot of answers about Anne and I have to say I like her all the more for it. This was an interesting view into the complicated mess of trying to decide who you really are and why that can be so frightening to contemplate.

Edit: On the reread of this I feel like I got so much more out of it than the first time. This series doesn't shy away from the realities that so much of the mage world is predicated on the fact that there is no real good or evil side. Everyone has to make tough choices to survive in this world and so even good people will end up in a very morally grey area. I like that in helping Anne Alex has to confront his past and realize that he has been coasting for the last ten years. He really needs to focus on what path he's taking and how to be ready for when Richard does show up again. I also like that Anne was forced into confronting her past and is no longer allowed to just ignore what went on before. She like Alex has to really come to a decision about the path she's on.

Fun, entertaining, interesting characters, lots of action

I wonder when book no.6 is coming out...

This series continues to be very good and I especially enjoy the secondary characters. Anne became a slightly more sympathetic character after this book, she had previously been my least favorite. Looking forward to the next.

Characters
Lot of growth and understanding of Anne, plus some growth for Alex.
Sonder still being dumb, but potentially coming around. More Caldera Less Luna ☹

Atmosphere
More time spent in Sagash’s Shadow Realm which isn’t that special

Writing
Solid writing, lots of putting characters into hard places and watching them struggle through it.

Plot
Everybody says that Richard is back, Then Anne gets kidnapped. And that’s the story

Investment
Can’t stop reading. Does such interesting things with the characters and plot. It’s tough to know what is the end game for the series.

Logic

Enjoyment
Absolutely love this series
Misc
The Blink Fox.
Richard is back and wants Alex to work for him.
Annes’ dual personality. She’s thinking it, just not saying it.
Infiltrating Party and the guy shows up. Onyx
