Just when I thought Alex had gathered together his Scooby gang they have all left him and he is alone once more. He no longer trusts that Talisid is as disinterested as he was before and he fears that Richard has returned to London.
The only one of the Scooby gang that hasn't changed is Luna. She comes to Alex asking for his help to bring Anne back to Camden. Anne has been expelled from the apprentice programme for fighting with Natasha (an evil girl who totally deserved what Anne did) and Luna is scared that Anne will be seen as vulnerable and easy prey by dark mages. Alex is unsuccessful in persuading Anne to come back to live with him and the next thing they know Anne has vanished.
Alex joins forces with Sonder and the Council, Luna and Variam to look for Anne. Their search involves attending a party at Jagadash's Tiger Palace where they run into several dark mages.
I can't help but feel sorry for Alex, the Scooby gang have virtually disowned him because he didn't act the way they wanted him to - they had built him up to be a superhero in their own minds and didn't like it when he turned out to have feet of clay. Alex too is struggling, after a decade of looking after number one, which followed a period of training as a dark mage, he finds it difficult to truly care about others - but he is trying.
In this book we hear more about Anne's time with her dark Master, understand why she was so disappointed with Alex and finally meet the elusive Richard. Looking back over the book whilst I liked it, it didn't grab me as much or feel as memorable as the last book and so for that reason I give it three stars.

Like the other books in the series, Hidden has plenty of urban fantasy action, from undercover social scenes to all out magical battles. But in this book, the serious emotional scars of both Alex and his friend Anne are much more in focus. The logical thing to do would be get help, but part of the problem with mental issues is that they make it hard to do the logical thing, so both end up putting themselves and others in greater danger. A good story, but I do find myself hoping that Jacka is going to resolve some of these mind games sooner rather than later, as watching these characters repeatedly make poor decisions is getting a bit old.
