An easy read. Nothing special.

Anne is kidnapped and taken to a shadow world. Alex must save her.

That was pretty nice and action packed and also quite a bit satisfying as the main character struggles with relations and with the meaning of his own experience and how poorly they gel even with fellow "dark mage survivors".

Also, the Big Bad is introduced and hell, it looks like we get a nice cookie cutter manipulative villain that somehow manages to balance out his act with godlike power. Until the motivations are unclear, I'll pen it to the "I needed him to look just as bad as Darth Vader, but less sympathetic."

It's not like antagonists are very deeply characterized in the Verus series anyway: they are a gallery of cartoony evil supervillains with the exception of the Nightstalkers, and this is all right with me.

I burned through this at work and it was good.
I think I have to take a step back from the series because I listened to two books of this series in a single week.

I like the way the characters stood for what they saw as moral views and how it's explained.
I liked that this explored a lot of concepts like what it means to take a life and what it would be like to have the power to heal, but being forced to use that same part to kill.

I liked how this strung together several of the threads from the books.
It not only closes the cliffhanger from book 4 but also has some pretty great closure Fri stuff from book 3, or was it 2? Whatever, it closed a couple on going plots and also added in new hooks and story lines based off of the events of not only this book, but also the previous books too.

It really was just good, I liked it. It was pretty riveting and the bits where the story literally stops and nothing happens for a bit is still quite exciting.

So...I read this too early. It's not even out in the U.S. yet, and I'm already jonesing for Book Six. It's times like this that I wish the Doctor would pay me a visit. I wouldn't even need to go with him -- he could just pop into the future and pop back with a copy of the next book. Future Lending Library!

A little slow in the beginning, but your patience will pay off. Alex Verus gets into a tighter spot than he has in quite a while, in a fascinating location, with a great climax that will drive you right to the next book!
