Some great set pieces in this book and the further backstory around Anne is welcome.

Just, good clean fun. Urban fantasy at its finest. So far this series has managed to keep the same feeling and spirit of the orignals and get more complex while avoiding the power creep issues the dresden books have displayed.

Often these types of series get worse as you go. This is an exception - the books seem to be getting better.

It's a 3.5
Though I still really like this series and more in particular the themes that were dealt with in this 5th instalment, I don't know, it felt somewhat thin...or maybe is was stripped bare to the essential elements, without some of the frippery of the other books. I missed some recurring characters. It was quite rightly focused on Alex and Anne, but I felt somewhat let down.

There are minor spoilers below, in a couple of places. Sorry, but I wasn't sure how to write this without small mentions. I am not torn on this one exactly... but it gave me some things to think about. We learn more about Anne, and even Talisid, in this one. We get an interesting location and bit of backstory and a really interesting method of... problem resolution... in this one from Verus at one point. But my boy Sonder is a bit of a problem in this one. He is in over his head and it shows. He is standing on his moral high ground to the point of being an actual problem, once we figure out how far he took it. And Caldera returns as his equal but also underling? That dynamic is a little weird.

Key facts are that Sagash is as bad as Anne thought he was (and at one point Anne and Verus sort of bond over the different ways their masters... suck?). Crystal is the pantsuited boogeyman to all the Light Mages and--spoiler, I guess, she shows in this one more reasons we should be afraid of her. I swear. And bonus magical fox! Everyone loves foxes.
