Ignore the "retelling" marketing, and this becomes a very enjoyable book. Because it is, in fact, not an accurate retelling.

pretty good reading experience - but I found myself impatient as HELLLLLLL for the plot to advance from *planning the princes death* to *killing the prince*. I think all that action didn’t happen until the literal last 30 pages of the book. I also wasn’t thrilled with how the story cuts off before showing how/if Leto recovers and moves on with her life after these events. that’s why I dropped 1 star

This is a rant review.
I'm not usually so strict about accuracy in books about greek mythology, but
1. some errors are unforgivable;
2. the author herself proudly declared the in infamous interview she's so above reading the original sources that she doesn't need to read the Odissey to write a retelling about the Odissey (this is not a retelling of the Odissey);
3. She claimed she's the first to blame Penelope for the death of her 12 handmaidens when there's the Penelopiad (not my favourite book, but still);
The truth is not that a book like this should not be published, but is shameful that people like the author can proudly say she didn't research before writing, because she already have the knowledge she needs. …and then write about a royal family in the Athens of IV century BC. There are tons of Athenians poets, philosophers, politicians, and the tyrannicides currently turning into their graves because everyone know that Athens is the city where the idea of democracy was born.
She is so over researching, because she is so well read. And yet she didn't grasp a singular thing about how ancient Greek society used to work.
She wrote about mattresses, in Ancient Greece.
Her claims are a spat in the face to writers who actually research and to people like me, who study and research Ancient Greece for living when I could have simply read Percy Jackson and then write garbage like this.
And still, Percy Jackson is clearly better than this, since Uncle Rick researches a lot.
