The book feels like a cash grab trying to capitalize on the Greek myth reimagining without actually doing proper research. The author has not read the Odyssey but has somehow written a reimagining of the Odyssey. The world building is shoddy and not thought through. The writing style is unnecessarily complex in the attempt to create a mystery.

Leto, Mathias, and Melantho have my heart. Their journey was beautiful and the ending had my heart clenched. I adored their bravery and tenacity and humor. What a glorious tale. Only half a star off for some juvenile antics (to be expected for YA) just not to my taste.

I loved the beginning and I loved the ending even more, but the middle just felt kinda eh to me. I don’t rly remember it, but it mostly set up the characters’ personalities so that the ending hits so much harder.

Wow. Just…wow. When I first read the blurb, I knew that the overall plot/premise was going to be amazing, but the book by far exceeded my expectations. Even Mathias’ perspective, which was my least favorite out of the three, was wonderful. I mean, the yearning for Leto, the outsider POV of Leto and Melantho’s relationship (which, those two? sold the whole thing for me), just…*chef’s kiss*. And the beautiful language throughout the book; every metaphor, piece of imagery, allusion, and recurring motif had me swooning. The whole Greek myth genre should have alerted me to the tragic ending, but I still held out hope until the last page. It was nice, though, how the tragedy was painted as poetic (the daffodils).
It reminded me of Circe and the Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller.
