this was honestly a bit bland, but i suppose it's meant to be. however, i really enjoyed reading from such a different perspective - the systematic way Keiko saw the world around her was strange yet (alarmingly?) relatable.

honestly, i think Murata's "Earthlings" is a better, more enthralling depiction of people who don't fit into society (aliens). this felt like Murata just barely dipping her toes into the water, whereas "Earthlings" was a cannonball.

I'm not sure how I feel about this book. I felt like it spoke about society's expectations on people to fit the social mold but responded to it in a pretty chaotic way that weirded me out, I've heard her other books cross that line into horror (so I'll probably check them out with a different set of expectations) but this one was just strange.
Based on the cover the title and the blurb - "It captures the atmosphere of the familiar convenience store that is so much part of life in Japan.", I was expecting a quaint slice of story, instead, it felt a bit edgy and uncanny.

It's a quick read and interesting since I don't know much about Japan or autism, but it seems pretty simplistic.

As always, Murata's commentary on society and the structure of it, the conformity and the inanity of it all - with a bit of nihilistic approach i'll add is classic of her. I actually enjoyed this one - it was hilarious at times and though the commentary isn't something new, the way she put it, the tone used (where the translation comes into play a lot), the character - she's able to add her own spin to it. I always feel her books are like beginner's venture into such topics and as someone who wants to revisit such views, there's always something to takeaway.

I have some quotes i really liked that captured the essence of this book.

My kind of quirky. Favorite part was the slacker roommate telling her she would be better off supporting him than living alone. Wish this was a book club book. A great deal to discuss in here.
