This was a smart and suspense filled romance. Highly enjoyable with the right amount of tension and intrigue.
Really enjoyed this! Slow starter but quite a good little mystery... can't wait for JT's story!

The writing and behavior of the characters are just absolutely ridiculous and unrealistic. I could see how someone who could enjoy what is essentially a fantasy daydream romance scenario, but that's not for me.
adventurous
mysterious
medium-paced
Solid writing (but kinda ehhhh on some of what feels outdated sociologically and maybe anthropologically?)
Erica deserved much better for a big portion of the story. Lee came off as mean at best, manipulative and controlling. Wasn't a fan..
Grant's author note was incredibly interesting

The writing itself is fine with some good turns of phrase, but so unbelievably unrealistic (in terms of archaeologists leading such exciting lives), and unfortunately perpetuates alpha male gender roles and bullying of nerds. I would not have read this novel if it wasn't about archaeology and if someone didn't tell me how amusing it was. I did indeed laugh twice: once with the author, and once at. A lot of cringe. Oh yeah, and the persistent sexual harassment disguised as flirting. The love interest is a gross person who should remain forever alone. The story also seems kinda racist against Mexicans and indigenous Americans.
That said, if you like action-adventure and/or mystery romance and don't care that most archaeologists have more fun in the dirt/lab than on the black market or whatever (and if you like Kathy Reichs), then sure, read this book.
The author is an archaeologist, so knows her stuff it seems. But there was basically no archaeology in this novel. oh well.

Moderate: Rape
3.5*
This book really picked up about halfway through and the suspense plot took a couple of twists that had me unable to put the book down. I didn't rate the book any higher because the romance aspect was weak, in my opinion. There is too much repetition of internal thoughts, especially with Lee constantly thinking about how he's lying to Erica. I also get tired of the insta-lust and constant references to how just looking at her/him made them "tingle," or sent jolts of awareness through them. The complications of the situation, both of them keeping secrets and how that could affect any future they might have, is interesting and worth spending time exploring, without the side trips into adolescent hormones.
Still, it's a good romantic suspense and well worth your time.
