“In those echoing, endlessly long seconds, he learned that it is human instinct to prolong your life as long as you can, even if it is in minute by minute increments.”</b>
Part of me is trying to not go through these books so quickly - because of the pacing they're pretty quick reads!- But I also don't want to stop this reading flow that's happening for me lol.
Firstly, I definitely didn't see that twist. Even as it was happening I was thinking maybe it wasn't as it seemed?! Don't trust a person that has to keep proclaiming they're nice. I think that was the point though. But I absolutely did not see it coming.
I really like these books so far. The cozy feel works well with the pacing and the eccentric characters and the secrets to be unearthed.
Jack and Ellery's relationship develops a little and then halts. Jack flip flops between being cold and warm. Which I didn't mind. I actually liked the conflict between them lol and was glad that when the opportunity sense that Ellery didn't immediately fold. Although if that man doesn't get himself a lawyer I'm gonna lose it. Also while I absolutely do get Jack's reasoning for pulling back when he eventually explains it, truly I do, he then goes and does something that just sends mixed signals altogether. Dude, stop it. You're stressing me out now lol.
Excited to read the next book and see where it goes. Do I want to see Jack get jealous? Yes.
Do I want Sue to fuck off? Immensely.
Also I know it's the cozy genre and some things have to be minimal or non-existent but if you're gonna attempt to swear, just swear or leave it altogether rather than writing “Give me a blankety-blanking break,”. Please. I beg. I can't do it lol

This book disappointed me. I had pretty high hopes after book 1, but this really dropped the ball. For one, the whole "Ellery is being framed!" plotline was a bit tired in book 1 already, let alone repeating it in book 2. The book also took way too long to bring up the mystery. Lanyon has trouble finding the balance between the lighthearted and cozy elements and wanting to convey a realistic gravity to crime and tragedy and relationships. It doesn't work. This book is just not very cozy... Also, almost every character is played up to be annoying in a way that I think is supposed to be endearing but gets tired very quickly.

I didn’t enjoy this much as the first one, but I still found this one super enjoyable! We follow Ellery and another murder he is suspected of committing- his ex boyfriend Brandon who recently moved to pirates coves haunted house. We also see more of Ellery and Jacks relationship develop. I definitely will continue with the series because it’s just so fun!
