I really don't like mysteries. It's one of my least favorite genres. I'm bad at figuring them out and they always make me feel stupid. I literally only read this because I want to complete all of the prompts for the GoodReads Reading Challenge this year, and this was the only one in the mystery category prompt to already be labeled as to-read for me, so I picked it. And I only wanted to read it because the premise sounded interesting. And did it deliver? Eh?
It was fast-paced and digestible enough, which I appreciated. It had a lot of good twists and turns, and while I did predict some things, there were still other things that completely surprised me. Including the ending. I liked how the protagonist had a friend who was a girl and not just jealous, and every autistic person needs that one neurotypical friend who helps them understand things.
I think my biggest issues were the characters. Because of the nature of the genre, characters in a lot of mystery stories aren't very well-thought out and aren't expanded on. They have enough personality to make you root for them, and they're serviceable, but that's all they are. Very simple. And a lot of my particular annoyance came from the protagonist. An autistic maid who gets under suspicion because of her behavior is a really interesting and relatable idea, which is what made me want to read this book to begin with. But I didn't really vibe with her.
Sometimes, she was relatable, such as her daydreams of over-the-top violence to people who wronged her, or having a misunderstanding of social cues and how things worked. Most of the time, however, she annoyed me with her very literal mind and strange behavior. Girl, I know your grandmother is dying, but your boyfriend stole all of your money and left you both penniless. I don't care how bad of a day someone is having, they need to know about emergencies like that that affect their lives. She came across as a very stereotypical autistic girl and that was something I couldn't relate to. I know the author herself isn't autistic but to be honest, that doesn't bother me. I can't even relate to neurodivergent and autistic writers writing autism because I have a really specific form people can't get right. So that doesn't bother me. And there are a lot of stereotypical autistic people. I know people who act like this. I still found her really annoying and didn't really enjoy being in her head because I find it frustrating when people are always extremely literal and can't take jokes the way she does. She's not wholly a stereotype, for example, she does enjoy physical contact, which was a pleasant surprise to see, but still.
I didn't hate this book. Most of my issues came from the genre, where it suffered from a fast pace and one-note characters, and the protagonist herself, who was very annoying to me. I feel maybe if I read more mysteries, I would've been much more forgiving of the choices used in this book. As is, I'm glad this is the only one I had to read for the challenge so I can put it from my mind.

I genuinely had to detach myself a little from the book bc I tend to get really anxious for the characters and I really wanted to finish it.
It got better after the 55% mark
