“justice is like truth—it, too, is subjective. so many of those who deserve to be punished never receive their just deserts, and in the meantime, good people, decent people, are charged with the wrong crimes. it’s a flawed system—justice—a dirty, messy, imperfect system. but if the good people accept personal responsibility for exacting justice, would we not have a better chance of cleaning the entire world, of holding the liars, the cheaters, the users, and the abusers to account?”
i have been wanting to pick up nita prose’s the maid for months now after hearing plenty of good reviews around it from my favourite bookstagrammers and booktubers and gosh it really didn’t disappoint at all! it was dark and witty and everything that i want in a somewhat-comedic thriller. sort of reminded me of the movie knives out too in the very beginning! i can even hear the soundtracks and all!
molly is such an interesting and lovable character. she warms my heart with her easygoing self and her straightforwardness. her thought process and conversations really cackled me up and it’s definitely something that surprised me most. she was also smart for a maid. in fact she feels MORE than just a maid. the way that she carried her gran’s wisdom through her every day life feels like a warm hug to me and the ending truly made me emotional and happy at the same time.
nita prose’s writing is simply brilliant and witty. her plot was suspenseful and exciting at the same time. the maid truly signed that “i’d-read-anything-this-author-writes” contract for me. i’d rate this a 5 but for now, this stops at 4 for me. nevermind that, i truly did enjoy my time reading this and definitely would suggest this to my fellow friends in search of a cozy mystery/thriller with charmingly witty characters, this is it for you.

- it was like…okay - not really groundbreaking or anything
- tbh kind of stereotypical neurodivergent, could be offensive
- twist at the end with the og mrs. black kind of made the whole thing a little cheap
- the plot was good i thought but it had a little too much cliche
- felt bad for molly
- family trope at the end seemed cute and just cheesy enough
- molly and juan manuel seemed a little thrown tg
- wtf she killed her grandma

Cute, fast, not terribly engrossing but enjoyable enough.
This is a quick, fun read. Personally, I would not classify this as a who-done-it on the bases that, while yes a mystery, it did not follow Ronald Knox’s 10 Commandments of Detective Fiction. This being that Mr. Black’s first wife was not mentioned early on or really even a character for that matter, as well as that Molly hid a lot from the reader. Also what’s up with Molly essentially killing Gran?
I don't get why this book is hyped up, it's so straightforward. Snooze.

The story was good but it was hard to enjoy because of how people treated Molly, especially those who took advantage of her. (Though it’s never stated, by the voice given to Molly she’s definitely either special needs or on the spectrum)
Additionally, a couple of the book’s reveals, caused me to wrestle with the moral/ethics of the situations. Not sure if I could recommend this book to others because of those.
