The Giver

I read The Giver about fourteen years ago, but certain parts of that powerful book stuck with me: the tossing of an apple, the sled ride in the snow. This graphic novel version was well done. I forgot what a cliffhanger of an ending this was, though! Maybe it seemed particularly this way in this format, since there’s less opportunity for inner dialogue. I realize there’s a sequel and now I’m feeling motivated to seek it out.

Wonderful adaptation of one of my favorite books!

I’m using this graphic novel to supplement a unit on comparing and contrasting the effect of different forms of the same story. I love that the graphic novel uses color to carefully show the reality of Jonas’ world. Some of the images are also helpful for portraying the characters’ emotions that sometimes are hard to comprehend for students, specifically relating to release.

This was technically a reread for me as I have read the non-graphic novel version. It was beautiful. I love the color palette and art style used. The editing was perfect, it gave the true essence of the novel despite being in a new format. I think this story is so important and I love that it is available to different types of readers. I also haven’t consumed this content since before I had kids which gave me an entirely new perspective on it. It’s was just a heart wrenching and even more thought provoking.
