second time reading this & i literally cannot decide if at the end there was really a house or if he was hallucinating it because they were ab to die... :(
Really wanted to love it, but I only found it okay.
I get the dystopia of it but it wasn't the best or the most thrilling.
I also didn't connect with any of the characters, even Jonas out protagonist. I couldn't sympathise with his last decision and although I felt shock and even horror at some of the decisions others made, I didn't feel for them.
Plus I didn't like the way it such an open ending. Like, such an open ending.
But, on a side note, still excited for the movie.

Sometimes the scariest future scenarios are those where everything is perfect. Here everything is smooth, perfect, precise and colourless - until Jonas get's assigned to be the memory of the perfect society and starts seeing colour and realising what lies beneath the perfect surface.
(apparently this is some YA classic? I've only come across the graphic novel, so no idea - but it works very well)

The Giver is one of my favorite books, and this was an excellent adaptation. The art does change the tone in the beginning so it starts off in a bleaker setting that I felt with the prose novel, but other than that, it felt extremely similar to the book. Art style was fantastic, and the only thing I don't really like is the cover, which I think would be a spoiler for anyone who hasn't read the novel.
Hews closely to the original. A good recommend to kids who have already read the print book, or for whom reading print is challenging. I, of course, think the book is much better and richer in the telling, but am glad the story is accessible to a wider audience in graphic format.
I'm not sure why I'd never read this book before. It was very captivating and thought provoking. I will definitely look forward to reading the remaining 3 titles in the quarter. Highly recommended for young readers.
I think I will love this story in every format. The illustrator incorporated colour in such a beautiful way. I listened to the movie score while reading which made the experience even more enjoyable.
