I haven't read the original novel so the story is new to me and I really enjoyed it.
Sadly I wasn't really a fan of the artwork because the text was very small and hard to read. I know it's a format that's heavy on visuals but I wish graphic novels were more inclusive. I have no problems with my eyesight and still found the book a strain to read.

This is the first time reading this book, and was totally unimpressed by the story itself: very talky, very uninspired.
Most of the rating is for Russell's sublime artistry, making the blandness of the story an actual feature of the art. As a fan of his for over 40 years, he never disappoints.

It has been so long since I revisited the world of The Giver. Last time I read the actual novel was back in sec 1 so nearly over 10 years ago. And while I absolutely did not enjoy it back then for multiple different reasons (not understanding English well enough and being forced to read because of school), I still remember it kinda clearly.
Reading this graphic novel felt familiar even though I couldn’t have been able to summarize the story before starting this reading.
The narrative in here really focuses on that utopian society that has an answer for all your problems, but when you really think about it, it’s kinda messed up on so many levels and in so many ways.

This graphic novel was really well done. I enjoyed it a lot and now I really want to reread/listen to the novel again. I think the story was faithful to the book and the artwork really works for this story and is quite powerful. Highly recommend.

This is an absolutely gorgeous adaptation of [b:The Giver|3636|The Giver (The Giver, #1)|Lois Lowry|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1342493368l/3636._SY75_.jpg|2543234]. I read the original novel a few years ago and loved it. When I saw the graphic novel format at the library, I was very excited to read it. And I was not disappointed.
One of this things I loved about Russell's adaptation is that he stays true to the lack of color within the world but sneaked some blue pencil into the artwork to make them a little more interesting to the reader. The technique really paid off and the illustrations are amazing.
The story sticks closely to the original novel and it was really interesting to see Russell's take on the story.
Beautiful, beautiful book.
I would definitely recommend to those who has read and loved The Giver as well as those who are interested in reading it. I think you can still easily read this if you have not read the original novel. However, the novel is amazing and definitely worth reading.
There are also some interview questions with [a:Lois Lowry|2493|Lois Lowry|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1348162077p2/2493.jpg] and [a:P Craig Russell|17607045|P Craig Russell|https://s.gr-assets.com/assets/nophoto/user/u_50x66-632230dc9882b4352d753eedf9396530.png] at the end, which are really interesting.
