Sometimes you re-read books from your childhood and they're not the same at all and you miss what you thought they were... and sometimes they are exactly what you remember. This book is the latter.

A good old-fashioned children's adventure story, with a hint of magic thrown in.....
When Tom's brother comes down with measles, Tom is sent to his aunt and uncle's flat, in a large old house, with no garden.
When the old grandfather clock strikes 13 every night, a garden appears from Victorian times and Tom goes to explore. He meets a girl called Hatty and he strikes up a friendship with her, returning each night to have adventures.
Lovely 1950s narration with illustrations typical of the time. From a time when a garden could hold days and days worth of adventures, finding joy in the small things.
I would have given 5 stars if it wasn't for the sexism typical of the time.

Five things about Tom’s Midnight Garden by Phillips Pearce 📚📚📚📚
1. What a great story! I can’t believe I’d never read it before this year. Tom has to go stay with relatives while his brother recovers from measles. While there he stumbles upon a clock that strikes 13, a garden that’s only there sometimes, and a Victorian family that can’t possibly be living there in Tom’s 1930s.
2. I loved reading about all the meetings between Tom and Hattie…especially the last one.
3. I was confused by how the time travel took place. The rules of this magic just didn’t make sense and the discussions about how time work were not helpful.
4. Even though I couldn’t “get it” I still loved it. It was a thrilling, imaginative, engrossing read full of warmth and atmosphere.
5. Great kick off to #middlegrademarch for me.

While I was familiar with the general idea at the heart of this story, I don't think I've ever read it all the way through - at least I didn't remember the ending - which was a lovely surprise. Love the exploration of time in this tale.
this was such a lovely story, and despite the fact that its a childrens book i think many adults would enjoy it. i found the story a bit slow to get into because it was a childrens book, but once i became more connected to the characters it was like reading any other book. I did see the plot twist at the end coming all the way from the beginning but that didnt bother me, for children it would have been a bigger shock. the ending, however, was absolutely heartbreaking. it was beautiful. the ending can definitely be appreciated by adults more than children.
