I am so obsessed with this world and these characters it's insane. I haven't loved a piece of fiction that much in a long time and this fact is the greatest review I could write for this story. The main catalyst for my love was the drama adaptation but this novel is where these characters were born so it deserves just as much praise, even though from literaly point of view it's not the best thing out there and I could point out so many aspects that could have been done better. Wei Wuxian will forever be one of my favourite fictional characters and even thinking about his story just blows my mind.
Goodbye my goodreads challenge this year... I probably won't be able to read anything other than fanfics at least until the end of the year just to stay with these characters longer.

There are two cringe worthy phrases in one‘s life that must be said, no matter what: ‘thank you’ and ‘sorry’. Someday, you‘ll say those words in tears.
Ten of thousands of words were left unspoken, in exchange for endless laughter and hugs.
This has been a wild ride, not in the least because waiting impatiently for translations (and blessing the people who do them) is its own kind of torture. It has gotten me to learn a lot of new things, about worlds and people both imagined and real.
It's an adventure. It's a (boy+boy) love story. It's a story of bad things happening to good people and good people trying to cope, and some of them maybe going bad because of that. It's a story of a lot of broken people, in a dozen different ways. It's a story of families, blood and found both. It's about kindness and cruelty, and about mob mentality, conformism, manipulation, honesty, purity, kindness... a lot of unhappiness and pain, and brilliant joy and unsuppressable joi-de-vivre.
Is it perfect? Not even remotely. Is it engaging? Yes. Are the characters interesting, and ones I want to spend hours upon hours (113 chapters averaging around 7-8k words a chapter is A Lot of words) with? Yup.
I picked this up as a way to rest my mind from pre-Christmas-vacation work sprint (of three months) and expected oversocialization, and it did all that, and some more.
Would I recommend it? Unless the person in question is looking for something to wow them with quality, yes.

After nearly a month of constantly reading and devouring this behemoth of a book clocking in at over 400,00 words and 1000 pages I can finally say, I AM DONE.
Did I enjoy it? I did.
Would I read it again? mhm...probably not.
There were many things that I really loved in the novel that was not included in the adaptations, but overall I think I preferred the cohesiveness of the live action and the donghua a lot more. I found myself quite startled by the jumps between time and flashbacks with no indication of such and maybe it was me just not paying close enough attention but I was always a little confused at first.
I appreciated that the novel had yiling laozu!wwx have red eyes and be extra unhinged during that period of time. That was hot and I loved every moment of it. Its reassuring to know that yiling laozu is sexy in the original novel and every adaptation of this content. Love that for me.
Overall it was good and I'm glad I read it after putting it off for so long, but I'd probably refer back to one of the adaptions if I wanted to jump back into the world of mdzs at any given time in the future. The 1000+ pages is just...so much.
as a final note.......... wei wuxian what you did to bichen is unforgivable.
