gonna quit my job so I can lie on the floor and cry about this all day without interruption!! thank you for supporting my life decisions
Of course it's a 5*. I can't even describe how much I love this book, so I won't even attempt it.
Just know this - if you have doubts or are intimidated by the number of pages, don't give up. It's written in such a way that it's impossible not to like it and it's also very fun and engaging. You'll finish it in no time and you may even regret it that you read it so fast!
Anyway, just trust me and pick it up.

Three and a half stars. Started The Untamed and got hooked enough to want to read the source material; the plot is engaging, the world-building was excellent, there was some really excellent characterization and delicious moral complexity. The writing was... I mean, it's a fan-translated web-serial, it was about what you'd expect, but the bits of the manhua I read that were translated were really well done, really faithful, and gorgeously illustrated. The thing that most :-/ me about it was, surprisingly, the romance. I was prepared to get invested, I WANTED to get invested, I am, in theory, invested, but in practice... idk, I haven't read much (any?) yaoi before, so maybe it's a feature of the genre, but a lot of it seemed... unenlightened? fetishistic? generally yikes? I love the characters and I love this ship as a concept, it's just that the execution was often underwhelming and/or cringey. Still a fun read though. Blew through it in record time (thanks, plague days). Now to go finish the live action drama...

I had to read this book after watching the live-action adaptation, The Untamed. I haven't been reading a lot these past few years, because I could not concentrate on reading. However, I decided to push through this one time. I have never read a book of 1,400+ pages, so it was a challenge. But I did it. And afterwards it didn't at all feel like it was that long. It just was THAT good.
I recognized many scenes from the c-drama, so the show did a great job. Especially considering the censorship in China. But this isn't a review of the show, but of the novel.
I almost never write reviews on Goodreads, but I'll just try to mention a few things I need to express about the book. Firstly, it's xianxia fantasy, so the fantasy elements could be a little weird for people who aren't familiar with Chinese fantasy. I've seen a few c-dramas, so I'm used to it. As for the story, it's one big adventure. The main characters slay demons and try to solve a mystery. There are many characters and they're all great. There's so much character development.
There are some side archs (which do contribute to the main story) which I REALLY like, especially the one about Xiao Xingchen and Xue Yang. That one was very well done. Even though I already knew what was about to happen, I was really immersed in the story.
The evolving relationship between main characters Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji is simply beautiful. I feel like they are the prime example of soulmates. It's a slow-burn romance, which I'm a fan of. And reading all the way to the end is really rewarding. It's perfect. (And VERY explicit, which I don't particularly like, but ok.)
Of course the (fan)translation could've been better. (There were many grammatical mistakes.) I'm still grateful for the translators, though, since they do it for free.
I will cherish this amazing story and characters for the rest of my life, and I wonder if I will ever read something like this again in my life.
If there is anything in this world that can top The Untamed, it would have to be the novel it’s based on. Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji are extremely interesting characters and their story is one of a kind. This is also the first series I read from Mo Xiang Tong Xiu and it really made me love her work. A truly brilliant author.
