Parts of this hit pretty hard, maybe it's the translation but it felt like some characters could've been more elaborated on. Nonetheless a fun read, although it's a bit slow in the in beginning arcs and the second half is what makes it for me. Not a fan of the erotica here, for the most part but to each his own or whatever. I think maybe if I hadn't watched the donghua first this would've wowed me. I went into it with my expectations high sine everyone kept saying that the donghua missed some things and tbf it did and there are some parts that I wish had been adapted but the novel didn't go as in depth into those parts as I wanted. It could be a translation thing but I also felt it was a bit too...straightforward? As far as the narration, Wei Wuxian is a bit too straightforward apart from his memory issues, I guess I'm just more used to her more unreliable narrators. There are parts where he's obviously lying but for the most part he's a bit too easy to read imho. Idk, maybe I'll give it some time to forget how the plot goes so I can go into this without most of my biases but for now this in a weird place of being technically well written but not something I'm in a hurry to reread.
