Christine did you just reread a 570k novel that you are also currently experiencing as an animated series, a comic adaptation, and a live action?

YES. YES, THIS IS WHAT IS HAPPENING. No regrets.

MXTX the queen herself. Great characters. Great story. 5/5 everyone should read this book. Especially since we are now getting the official translation!

This is the first book in this genre I have read. The translation I read was a free one done by volunteers. It was a good understandable translation, although I'm sure it lost some of the expressiveness of the original. I really liked the plotting of the mystery and the worldbuilding. I had a little trouble with the romance just because that trope doesn't really work for me - the pining, the misunderstandings, the hijinks. If it hadn't been for the censorship in the live action version on Netflix, I'd prefer that if only because they seemed to have a much deeper and more mutual level of intimacy. If you're only going to do one, I'd recommend watching the show instead of reading honestly.

I have watched the live action drama, animated series and finally read the book as well. I swear I cannot move on from this and you know what, I won't even try. It was captivating and kept me on the edge. A part of my heart is already taken by this plot. However, the only problem I have with this book is that when I first read it, I was young. I know there is age warning but I did not listen. I have watched everything there was to watch. I just had to read the book. Plus, I grew up on wattpad so I thought I would be okay but well, I was not. There were times where I was like "I should not be reading this". I felt like a fly on the wall, invading someone's privacy. But that will not me from giving this a five stars. I will totally come back to this when I feel like I am ready.

"From then on, he could never move his eyes away again."

MDZS was my introduction to MXTX's works (through the animation, and I had watched the live action series as well), but ironically it's the LAST novel I finished. I had started with TGCF, then SVSSS, and eventually decided to end with this one. It's kind of bittersweet, but anyways!

The Good:The strongest point for me in this book is the characterization. I found many of the characters interesting since most would be considered "morally grey", and I found it easy to understand everyone's point of view in situations. Wei Wuxian made for an interesting main character, and he stayed as my favorite character throughout the whole time I was reading this. I also love the worldbuilding, which is something the author does very well in all her stories. The plot did a good job with providing the right amount of humor combined with utter sadness (see: Yi City Arc), and really sent me on a rollercoaster of emotions. Also since I had completed the live action first, I felt there were some things that were left unexplained or ambiguous there, and the novel cleared up those events for me.

The Bad: I'm very attached to this series and its characters, but I cannot rate this story more than 4 stars on a writing level. The writing style is a little all over the place, and the placement of flashbacks can make this story hard to follow, as it left me a little confused at some times. There were some plot elements that I think weren't alluded very well in the novel and were done better in the Untamed.
SpoilerFor example just to name one, with Jin Guangyao being the "villain", there was virtually no pretense or hints that made me gasp in realization in the novel. In the Untamed, Meng Yao is introduced at the beginning, and his progression into the antagonist is much more developed and interesting. I think even if I had read up to this part in the novel before my reaction would be the same.
Another thing for me is the development of some characters, which is also something I think the Untamed handled in terms of giving side characters more stories to them (Wen Qing is a good example).
