Qué puedo decir de este libro. Maravilla de principio a fin.
Discontinuing my occasional read of the Exiled Rebels Scanlation version (which was quite the labor of love and of just plain labor, but was a rocky translation) so that I can wait for this more official one!: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/58701673-grandmaster-of-demonic-cultivation
"Lil Apple was flabbergasted."
That's it. That sums up the novel.
Best line in the entire thing

This was one of the best things I've ever read. I started watching The Untamed, but after 21 eps I decided to pause it and read the book to see what I was missing. I feel like that made it so much easier to grasp who everybody was since it does get pretty confusing when they each have like three names.
Huge, huge, huge fucking props to Exiled Rebels for translating this, they were amazing, but I so badly wish I had a physical copy so I could flip back to sections and reread to my hearts content. I am obsessed with Lan Zhan being obsessed with Wei WuXian, there were so many little things he did that made me fucking swoon. But, even outside of the romance this story was fucking awesome. Super interesting characters, world, and "magic". Every reveal, twist, and turn more engrossing than the last. I really wanna read more stories like this, it was so refreshing and captivating.

Yet another reactionary story full of random chance and deus ex machina. It’s impossible for me to feel invested in the main character or the story, and the world building is just a foil for the deus ex.
Characters:
The characters here are the most good part of the story. They have distinct personalities. Of course, they all seem very shallow and have repetitive actions, but it’s an oh well. The main character is a decent guy trying to have fun in life. The main supporting character is a tsundere dude.
Story:
The story follows the main character as he reacts to the random occurrences around him. I personally detest this kind of story. It’s hard to feel invested in anything of this book because random occurrences take away any possibility of progress or lasting change. Kind of like how you would feel less invested in your homework if the teacher is going to roll dice to calculate your grade anyway. Also there is a lot of deus ex machina here, with characters being saved by random, non-foreshadowed people or things out of the blue.
World:
The world building here is annoyingly full of information dumps, and isn’t the focus of the story anyway. Not a lot of effort is put into the world building because the story is more about the characters, so you already wouldn’t read the book for the world building. On top of that, the book is full of random name drops and lists of people and places, which is annoying and impossible to remember. The world building tells you about nonsense without giving you a reason to be invested in the information, resulting in a lot of forgetting and subsequent confusion.

Good character development! Mo Xiang Tong Xiu explores the grey area very well, I like how everyone in this book (except, perhaps, Sizhui) is not free from only having one side; everyone's characterisation (and story) is neither good or bad, but both.
