I couldn't get enough of this book, and this was the third or fourth time I've read it! Oppel did a fantastic job of creating the world of this book, and I devoured every detail, from the exciting tumult of take-off to the dining room mealtime din. As a child, I was thoroughly enchanted by the Hidenburg and the Titanic, and this book perfectly captures what fascinated me about those ships. I only wish the book could come illustrated like Scott Westerfeld's Leviathan Trilogy.

Matt Cruz is the best cabin boy one could ever hope for. He knows everything about the airship that he works for and will do anything for the ship. On a typical journey, Cruz meets Kate, a girl whose grandfather died aboard the ship a year earlier. She is determined to resolve the mysteries surrounding her grandfather's death. Matt thinks she's cute, so he is compelled to help her. Pirates, mysterious islands, and a rebellious girl that can't be contained, may turn this standard flight into something more dangerous.
This novel reads like a combination of Treasure Island and Leviathan. While this isn't a novel I would give to the young readers of Treasure Island, it is a great next step. The only issue I take with this novel is with the character Kate, who is the stereotypical damsel in distress. Everything that she does creates more disaster. Kate just seems worthless, which doesn't sit well with me. I appreciate strong female characters and Kate is the opposite. However, I did enjoy the novel.

2.5 stars, but I'm not feeling generous enough to round up today. Pure action-adventure steampunk YA thing, very readable, very forgettable. Takes no stands, makes no enemies, but has a good time serving up slightly implausible action sequences.

The writing is so dreamy. Very YA, so don't expect a ton of depth if you're a seasoned fantasy reader.

A buddy recommended this book. He loved it but I didn't as much.
