I really enjoyed reading this book, but I do feel that the ending was a little bit of a letdown.
The story is told through a series of short stories that takes place at different points in history on the same island. I usually am not the biggest fan of this style of narrative; however, I was so invested in trying to figure everything out that it did not bother me at all. Really for me, all the fun was in trying to figure everything out and may be why I found the ending to be a letdown. The author does do a good job at weaving hints into the each story and making connections clear.
Probably good for readers who like things a mysterious and about love.

Dark and creepy with an interesting past lives plot. A lot of death, but not overly gruesome. I was initially turned off to learn it would fit in a horror genre, but found it to be spooky and interesting without being disturbing. I never really understood why these two people were so deeply connected, but I think the story still held firm.
If this wasn't the Printz winner this year I'd have never picked it up, as the description of this book doesn't do it a bit of justice. That being said I was happy I was given a reason to read it, as it's well written and very engaging.

Seven lives for 2 people. Written backwards it comes full circle and ends so that every part of the story is understood. They do not always have the same relationship, but they always find each other. And there is always a form of sacrifice from one for the other.
So it is.

I have a love/hate relationship with Marcus Sedgwick's books. I love My Swordhand is Singing with an intense passion; Revolver and The Book of Dead Days, not so much. I tend to approach with caution and his books get pushed down my to-be-read list easily. That said, I really enjoyed Midwinterblood! The short vignettes all tied together by a common thread through time were engrossing. I especially liked the story of the archaeologist. Each story added a piece to the bigger puzzle and, at the end, the reader looks back over a large landscape, seeing the patterns merge and form a whole, like the painting. A great read.
