An amazing novel.

The fantasy aspects - worldbuilding, magic system, stories, myths, monsters, religion and politics are rich, refreshing, and well spun.

The main character is a really interesting narrator, since despite the story being in first person, we can generally form a more accurate picture of what is going on than she can, and we have to watch her form her own conclusions.

I really liked the parts of the story that dealt with generational trauma and difficult relationships with family members. The author could have written a “conclusion” to the mcs mix of feelings towards her mother, but it feels more natural to still desire love even at the end.

Overall the only thing that was a minus was that despite the importance of the “12” we really only get to know 2 to 3 of the council. But I guess the book would have been way too long otherwise haha.

This book was refreshing and captivating. The world it builds is vibrant and culturally rich, with characters to reflect it. I love the themes of generational trauma, the harm of patriarchal systems and the power in the stories we tell. The main characters own struggle with her self centered manipulative mother hit pretty close to home for me and I was tearing up when she visited her mother in prison and still had to fight with her want for approval and affection and her mother continuing to gaslight and manipulate. My only criticism is that their are way too many council members. The main character says that they all have a special link and connection and that they are all dear friends but you only really see that connection with three or four of them. Other than that, fantastic book that I will be recommending to others.
