Truly every man in this trilogy was painfully stupid.

Fun read, and now I'm full up on historical fiction again for a while.

I was in the mood to fall into a time period I knew well. Gregory did an excellent job of taking me there. Yes, it's a historical soap opera of a story with grand characters and twists and turns, but the settings and the overall mood and the characters all allowed me for two lovely long evenings to escape the rain and cold and travel back in time to England and Barbados and dwell in a place I know well in fact, but could feel and smell and taste; and that was lovely. The fact that the history was accurate was a plus for me. I don't usually like historical novels due to faulty research or anachronisms.

I really don't like short chapters in books.

The short chapters make me think I'm reading a James Patterson book, which is not a compliment. Overall this book was okay.

This book is slow, dull, and has an ending which makes you wonder what was the point of the book. I usually like Phillipa Gregory, but this whole series has been dire. Unnecessary dialogue, very short scenes in different places, and a cliffhanger-type ending make this book both incredibly dull to read and unsatisfying to finish.
I’ve given 1.5 stars because I did persevere through it, and some of the subplots were ok.

Just as a warning for this whole series, it features two lesbian relationships which are both portrayed as only occurring in order to manipulate others, so take the ‘LGBT’ tags with a pinch of salt.
