I liked Melena’s Jubilee better than I thought I would - I couldn’t tell what it was about from the cover. I liked the optimism and healthy outlook at first... but all of the good choice-making examples got to be a bit much by the end.

Lovely story about forgiveness and turning over a new leaf. Not too preachy. Bright, realistic illustrations complement the text perfectly.

A beautiful story about making the best of a day, a fresh start after a bad day, and sharing kindness with others. This book is on the long side so it would be better as a one-on-one story.

Melena wakes up one morning in an especially good mood and a song in her heart. She decides to listen to this song and let it guide her through the day. This book carries themes of forgiveness, kindness, and starting each day with a blank slate. I liked the diversity in the book as well and the author discusses what jubilee means and its history in the back of the book.

Note: I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley. I was not compensated in any other fashion for the review and the opinions reflected below are entirely my own. Special thanks to the publisher and author for providing the copy.

the message of this picture book is sorely needed in a culture that likes to keep score and perpetually punish people. Melena wakes up expecting to still be in trouble only to find that her mama and gramma have forgiven her. She takes that unexpected joy of grace and extends it to others around her. I especially recommend you read the author's note about the historical significance of jubilee for African Americans. I had to chuckle that two of the 7 suggestions for a fresh start day include returning late books to the library and paying off late fees.

Collage-style illustrations, with a nice author's note about the history of the word 'jubilee' within the African-American community and tips on how to 'make a fresh start' every day with how you treat others and yourself.

This is a great reminder to children of the joys that kindness, generosity, and grace can bring to you. Instead of forcing her way through the day, Melena considers others first and treats the day as a fresh start, putting all her problems from yesterday behind her.

Recommended for one-on-one reading with older pre-readers, or for independent reading for young readers. The seven tips to your own Fresh Start Day are a nice addition, as is the author's note on the significance of the concept of jubilee in African-American history and the importance of debt relief to struggling peoples and nations.

This may not serve as a great read-aloud book to groups -- maybe to elementary age groups of children, but not younger. It is very text-heavy, but the illustrations are beautiful and the story will hold the attention of older readers in a group.

I received this book via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Melena's Jubilee by Zetta Elliott and Aaron Boyd (illustrations) is a picture book that celebrates turning over a new leaf and taking a positive attitude even when the world wants to get you down. More importantly though, it's about how infectious small acts of kindness can be.
