Save for the old use of the n-slur, I found exactly what I was looking for character and movement. In the past Woolf’s overly-descriptive nature would not catch my interest; however, reading for the goal of turning Orlando into a dance piece actually endowed every detail, color, symbol, and movement description with purpose and power. I am excited to explore the next creative process.

“‘Better is it’ she thought, ‘to be clothed with poverty and ignorance, which are the dark garments of the female sex; better to leave the rule and discipline of the world to others; better be wuit of martial ambition, the love of power, and all the other manly desires if so one can more fully enjoy the most exalted raptures known to the human spirit, which are contemplation, solitude, love,’

at times, an unfortunate impression of the gender binary, but so much more often an excellent sense of feminine and masculine energies in tow of one’s character

The racism on page one is hard to get past and confronting without prior knowledge of continued racial slurs. Woolf’s prose and lyrical style are beautiful and make for  an interesting read as are the early thoughts on gender. One day, with this knowledge perhaps I’ll return  and attempt to finish it. Or perhaps someone will rewrite a contemporary version as  compelling as the queer film adaptation I enjoyed recently.
