I selected this as my choice for the 2018 BookRiot Read Harder Challenge prompt "the first book in a new-to-you YA or middle grade series." It was included in the list of recommended titles, so I decided to give it a shot. In addition to being beautifully written, the book is beautifully illustrated. The edition that I read included an explanation about how the book came to be and a reader's guide that would work for discussions involving young and adult readers alike. Some of the stories were familiar to me, but not all of them. I enjoyed the fact that the main character was a young, adventurous girl and how the author wove in Chinese fairy tales into the overall plot. It was a fun, joyful read and made me want to read the follow-up.

Rather Wizard of Oz-ish in its characters. Tougher to follow auditorily because half is storytelling within the main vein of the story. Evidently in the companion novel's audiobook, there's a chime that signals going into or out of a story-within-the-story. In print, there's a font change.
