The first time I read this was almost ten years ago, and I haven't seen it since. I was in grade school, and I remember loving the book so much that I made my mom read it. She loved it too! This book is genuinely such a beautiful story about cherishing the people around you and the importance of stories.
This is a children's book, but anyone can read it, learn from it, and get something wonderful out of it.

I did like how all the stories interwove. That was neat. I was surprised that none of the stories turned out to be embellished, as is the nature of stories...

I can see why so many teachers read this to their elementary school classes. I had never read this before, but it is widely acclaimed, so I added it to my bag to buy. This was one of my mystery books this year. Great story, I really enjoyed how the "stories" and myths connected to the "present" day, and Magistrate Tiger was a real person (in the story). There were some predictable parts, but that might not have been the case if I were reading it as a child.

I'm interested in reading the companion novels, and I wonder how they interconnect and if any of the characters from this book are in those other ones!
Over all, I would have really enjoyed it as a kid I think and I enjoyed it as a grown up lol.

a very charming book! it reminds me of the best of children's stories -- a lot of gentle wisdom told with a child's simplicity and understanding. i loved each of the little folktales nestled within minli's larger quest/adventure. i also really enjoyed reading about the chinese folktales i know in english.
