Ming Li lives in the small town of Fruitless Mountain and her mother constantly sighs in despair. After buying a gold fish, that Ming Li was told would change her fortune, Ming Li sets off on an adventure to meet the man of the moon and change her fortune. Along the way she meets many new friends and hears many new stories. This novel is really stories within stories and would be perfect for a storyteller.

I was wrapped up in the story. It brought me back to storytimes and Barney shows of days gone past.

This was really good, I’m quite surprised by how many Chinese folk tales I remembered

This was a childhood favorite, though, which I would always read at the library

I've been rereading lots of books I haven't touched in a while to clear out my shelves a bit. There's always a bit of trepidation, because you never know what will or won't hold up.
But this is just as stunning as it was in middle school.
Lin's protagonist, Minli, is such a hopeful and joyful character, that you can't help but root for her. The ways folklore and storytelling traditions are woven into the plot is so lush and adds to the plot in a really wonderful and unique way. The episodic nature of the story flows incredibly well and every side character is so beautifully fleshed out. I also loved seeing kind and supportive adults in a kids book. Minli's parents also grow and go on a journey over the book and the adults Minli encounters support her, but never do her work/task for her.

What a lovely story! The book is so colourful and so much effort has been put into every page. Has some great lessons for adults and children!
