this is a solid 4.5 star read!
I really enjoyed how real this was, especially all the talk about genders and misgendering- I really liked how Simone wasn’t perfect with all that- I can imagine stumbling over pronouns like she did at first, but I don’t think I’ve ever read about someone actively working to fix it (every other LGBTQ+ book, the characters seem to just, *be able to do it* but let’s be honest, not everyone’s like that, and I enjoyed the change)
I’m sorta sad the cooking part took a backseat to all that, I’d love to have seen more of a show and not tell about how successful their channel was, and more of the content creation side of things instead of relationshipy stuff, but maybe that’s just me
also slowww burnnnn >>>

Only the people at the top could change things, and they’d made it clear over and over again that they didn’t want to.
Loved the baking creativity in here. The ability to talk about real world issues without being too heavy handed. The queer joy of Found family. Just a really nice read

I only gave it 4 stars because I'm not a huge fan of reading queer fiction that isn't "anyone who is queer is established as such from the get go." I hated that for the first 150 pages, the enby character was being misgendered by everyone bc they hadn't come out yet.
I have so many complicated feelings about this book. Mostly negative. It feels like a cis person finding out non-binary people exist. I’m someone who is well aware that non-binary people exist, so this book was frustrating. Nothing happened with the sexism and transphobia, and Simone’s end opinion is that she can’t do anything because change has to happen high up. Yes and grassroots efforts pressure higher ups to impact change. I wanted more romance and less quasi-social justice rhetoric.
If you want a food themed romance with a non-binary lead, may I present Love and Other Natural Disasters? It’s spicy too. Or the bakery themed romance The Heartbreak Bakery.
My original DNF was right

I struggled on how to review this book. On the one hand I really loved seeing some sort of representation of nonbinary people in Ray. But Simone as an MC was unlikeable a majority of the time. I also had a hard time enjoying it because I felt like I was reading a strange genderbent Claire Saffitz X Brad Leone Bon Appetite fanfic. (Simone is clearly Claire and Ray resembles Brad in a lot of ways it’s almost eerie)
I genuinely think I would have loved this story more had it been from Ray’s point of view. As a nonbinary person myself, I will take whatever rep I can get but it lacked in some ways.
Would I read it again? Yes
Am I still telling my friends about it? Yes
Is it perfect? Not by a long shot.

definitely would've been better if they deviated from the bon appetit saga a little more
