I have mixed feelings about this book. It was, in a way, really beautiful and it explored the relationships between the women through confinement, their escape and their survival, over the course of many years, beautifully. The development of the main character too is really interesting. I really enjoyed reading how she developed as a person and how she learnt to understand the others she felt so disconnected from, and built relationships with them. I think the mysteries we don’t get the answers to contribute to an unsettling theme, which Id say is well done, and I think the lack of answers and lack of progress gives an element of sadness too as we start with this curiosity and eventually give up on the idea of finding answers. I think this book was overall really interesting and gave me a lot to think about as I read it. However, part of me feels unsatisfied with having no answers at all. It was like I was waiting for something to happen and it never did. Towards the end of the book, I found that once I started reading I didn’t want to stop, but once i’d put it down i found it harder to pick up again as I knew what I’d read next would be almost exactly what I read before. The repetitiveness in the book did bore me at times. Also idk if it’s just my copy or something but there’s a few typos and grammar & spatial errors which always catches me off guard in books and makes me giggle.
I liked it!! The first existentialist literature that I've read and liked (admittedly, out of a very small sample set because I hate The Stranger so much I've avoided most existentialist literature ever since). And not just that I liked it, but I think it gave me a new perspective on life. I feel very weird about giving this 4 stars because the way I liked it was so different from the way I like other books, but nevertheless 4 stars feels right.

I had a different idea about what this book would be about before I started reading it. I did not realized it would have the sci-fi elements it did. A part of me wishes that was explore more, but I understand it was not the main point of the book and having some mystery is probably more satisfying than an actual answer by the author.
It is bleak, but the book itself doesn't focus on it. This book will definitely stay with me for a while.
