I wanted to like this so much more than I did, but it’s a great idea that doesn’t quite live up to its promise. The story is pretty broadly drawn, and a lot of it lives in the narration rather than the actions or dialogue, so the characters don’t feel as lived in as they could be. Selfishly, the hijinks and wacky missed connections take a bit to get going - there is more rom than com here, and I love crazy circumstances that lead to plot development. Essentially, there are two stories: Amy starts a business of her own (fine), and Amy comes out to herself and falls in love in the process (lovely, more sweet than funny) that both struggle to come together. Tulsa is also a character here; the author sells us on its charms and reminds us that coming out and being queer in the South is a different experience. I like what this book represents, but sadly I didn’t love the book itself.

A little bit boring and predictable, characters seemed like basic cliches. Not a terrible story though, kinda had hallmark movie vibes.

A lovely romance ❤️ Plus I’m always a fan of books that include recipes of a dish from the story 🥹

SO good. The character development was chef’s kiss. Moreover, this book made me laugh, cry, and made my little queer heart grow a few sizes.

this was really enjoyable! i personally would have ditched charley though (the ghosting and game-playing doesn’t really do it for me). really the most enjoyable thing about this book was amy’s career trajectory, which is what i think kept me reading—i enjoyed seeing her business grow and her ability to find a career that makes her happy and fulfilled. it sounds like a lot of fun!

the whole gay marriage aspect of the book was a little heavy-handed, and it’s hard to feel the urgency when you know it eventually gets legalized. however, who knows, that right could be revoked under the current administration… okay no more thinking for today :)

This is the exact gay equivalent of an early 2000s romcom—I kept picturing Amy as Katherine Heigl—but instead of a male lead who is kind of a wet blanket there is a masc of center lesbian who is kind of a wet blanket. The book did a lot of telling not showing. A lot of the dialogue felt contrived.

The only reason I didn’t DNF is because I read it for book club.
