I loved this book! The weaving of the two stories together was well done and I found myself eager to hear more about both time periods.
This book isn't a romance and more follows the story of our female main character Alice, a writer and Margaret, an old celebrity socialite. I found my Margaret's stories too detail heavy and slow at the beginning but enjoyed them towards the end when they followed her life closer. I found the romance subplot of Alice's story forced and sudden. I enjoy Emily Henry's style of writing but the romance aspect was not up to par with her other books. I would've preferred to steer away from that genre and focus on the main female characters.
I always seem to follow the same process with Emily Henry books: I'm excited to read them, disappointed at the beginning, start to enjoy the build-up and then get sucked in and end up reading until 3 in the morning until I've finished it.
This one was no different! At first, I thought it was a copy of The Seven Lives of Evelyn Hugo (a journalist comes to interview a famous recluse), but it turned out to be a story of how fame, fortune and secrets affect people. All with the banter and chemistry (here between the FMC journalist and a rival journalist) for which Emily Henry is known.
A recommended read for fans of Emily Henry and heartfelt biopics.

I commend Emily Henry for venturing out and trying a different narrative style, but it wasn’t it for me. Too similar to the seven husbands of Evelyn Hugo
