This was an enjoyable sequel, and definitely an improvement compared to the first book.

The humour within this book was definitely an improvement. The first quarter of the book incorporated humour that had me laughing out loud. It was nice considering the ending of Sword Catcher and the seriousness that hangs over these characters and the plot.

Lin and Conner's romance was amazing. I was grinning from ear to ear (most of the time) during their interactions. I loved seeing them interact a lot more in this novel, as I was unsure of what their relationship really was at the end of Sword Catcher. I'm sad at where things ended in this book, but I hope that we can see their relationship blossom more in the next book.

Conner and Kel's relationship was very interesting. I loved watching their close relationship start to fall apart. Having that tension in their relationship with everything that revolves around them was very interesting.

I loved seeing more of the Ragpicker King and the Black Mansion. I loved spending more time with him, Ji-An, Merren and Jerrod. Their inclusion was so fun and brought a lot of humour to the more serious aspects of the novel.

I also enjoyed learning more about the Ashkar and their religion. It was interesting to see how they all reacted to Lin and her actions from the last novel and where that allows her character to end up at the end of this novel.

Overall, this was a very enjoyable read and I'm excited to see how the story unfolds in the next book.
