Big improvement on the last book. Immediately more engaging, more interesting romance points, and more fun reveals. I'm so excited for the Prosper Beck and Ragpicker team up I've been hoping for that and I'm glad Connor seems to be scheming. There was even a reveal that I did not see coming, although it was a bit obvious looking back, so I was pleased. That arrest had me stressed and I must say I hate Joss with a burning passion now and I'm so annoyed with the Maharam. But that's also so realistic. People want their goddess of fire until they have her and it's scary.

Totally cliché-ridden star-crossed lovers “we can’t be together because reasons. We will lie to & keep secrets from each other for contrived & pointless reasons leading to misunderstandings that cause death & destruction to everyone & everything in the world that could have been avoided incredibly easily (& still could with a 30 second explanation). Then we will claim the betrayals are so fundamental that forgiveness is impossible in order to hurt the other so badly they'll never come near again meaning we’ll have made the tragic, painful decision that saves them from being targeted by the baddies”. Every character did that to one or more other character like a 90s romcom analysed a la Pepe Silvia.
Plus nothing happened apart from the above pointless yearning & smouldering (and a bit of pointless, unrealistically setup sex) until the book was almost finished.
