Sometimes, witnessing something you shouldn’t have is a bad thing. “Lucy” witnesses what she thought was a crime, and calls the police… not knowing who she was dealing with. The reputation of Asher Black DEFINITELY precedes him. Asher wants to know who called the police and he does just that. They both have pre-conceived notions of what the other person is like, and boy are they wrong! With Asher’s reputation of being associated with the mob, he is in danger of losing his company. He’s being made to look unstable because he’s unwed… this needs to be remedied immediately!
I thought this was a great start to a series. It’s listed as 300+ pages long, but they fly by! The interactions between Asher and Lucy are interesting. As the reader, you know Asher is dangerous, but you also can tell he will do anything for the people he loves. Lucy tends to run at the first sign of trouble… as one does growing up in the foster care system, but there’s something about Asher that keeps her from running. I enjoyed this one, and hopefully, I’ll enjoy the next one!

Decent read!
Couple of little things that bugged me (spoilers):
There is huge talk about the mafia, and they play such a minor role in the book. Like...the protagonist who is hiring people to kill them...is simply a corporate guy who wants to be CEO. Just seems like a huge reach.
Another thing was that there was a bit too much descriptions. Even simple things were being explained which I feel didn't need to be.
Third...literally every single blonde woman in the book was the stereotypical gold digger who looks down their nose at the main heroine. The rich friend she makes is the exact opposite and is of course...brunette. This stereotype of feminine and blonde women being antagonists is heavily overused. Felt a hit like reading a teen wattpad story at times.
Next...for a woman who is supposed to be one of the smartest and is attending the best school in the country...it doesn't really seem like it. Her education is pushed to the background, and she comes off childish sometimes in the way she talks to people. Some things had me cringing at times.
And finally...all that build up, and the sex was fast and over with pretty quickly. It seemed very distant, like a hook up, rather than sex with someone you're supposed to love.
...
I know I've made a lot of complaints haha. The story lacks in some areas, again reminding me of a wattpad story. But...
Overall it was still a decent and fast read. I did enjoy it.

While the writing was fine this wasn’t a great book for me. The book took way too long getting to the relationship development and the mc’s pov was aggravating. The spicy scenes were okay it not work the slog that was me trying to read the rest of the book.

Protective, but not controlling male lead
HEA
Both leads have troubled upbringings
Lucy, the female lead, witnesses something she’s not supposed to and calls the cops. The male lead, Asher, tracks down the woman responsible for calling the cops and ruining his plans. Upon finding Lucy, he has a proposal for her that will benefit both of them.
This story was unique and was a page turner. I adore both Lucy and Asher. They are both strong and intelligent characters, with difficult pasts that give their characters depth. I liked Asher because he is not overbearing as many mafia characters are, yet he was still very protective of Lucy and his family. He had many traits that readers like in mafia books, such as being intimidating, protective, and mysterious, without being a controlling, misogynistic asshole. Lucy was a strong main lead, which isn’t common for mafia books. Typically in these types of books, the male lead asks unreasonable requests from the main female character and she then blindly allows poor treatment from a man she hardly knows. I appreciated this story, because Asher wasn’t unreasonable and he respected Lucy. In return, Lucy wouldn’t have allowed Asher to be disrespectful toward her. I also really liked that their relationship grew over months and wasn’t instalove. At the same time, the story didn’t drag at all. If you like CEO stories with mafia undertones, I highly recommend this book. This is the first book I’ve read by this author, she is an amazing writer and I can’t wait to look into her other books. She can write the classic tropes we look for in CEO/mafia stories, yet still writes characters that are unique and complex.

Mafia boss falls for brainiac nerd. Enjoyed how the author revealed a different side to the main character.
