Nice, uplifting story about two young women following a path that was unusual for their times. Luckily they both had wealthy and loving families giving them the freedom to follow their hearts and ambitions. Worth the read.

the story is wonderful though with a very politically conservative view point but the writing leaves much to be desired
This book tells the story of two young women of affluence who end up as teachers in rural Colorado for a year.
I thought the premise of the book was very interesting, as I am a teacher and really enjoy history. But for me the book was tough to read for the first several chapters. These chapters are giving the background of Ros and Dorothy, and explaining how they end up in the West. The chapters seemed to be simply a list of names and one or two lines of a story that are never referenced again, so to me it was very dry and confusing.
But about chapter six or seven, when the women are heading to Colorado to take up their jobs, things get much better. The stories become richer and more entertaining, and the characters are more realistic.
But for me that didn't balance out what was missing. I found myself wanting more depth in the stories and stronger profiles of the characters, and so while the book was interesting, I don't know if I will read it again.

The story of two college educated women from New York (1916)travel to the wild west of Colorado to teach. It's an interesting history of their families (both well to do)and a good description of the times in Colorado.
This book sounded great but I found the writing dry as the Colorado dust. I just couldn't get into this book. Perhaps if there wasn't so much background in the beginning I could have stuck with it until it got good. But alas too many books, not enough time.
Loved reading about the time and the place and the adventure of the two women together, but was very disappointed by the ending.
Story of two society girls from out East who take on the daunting job of teaching school in the mountains of Colorado. Wonderful history of the continued settling of the West and character study of two amazing women!

I think the author should have let Ros and Dorothy’s story come through more in the letters, give them a bigger voice. The author definitely did her research. However, she forces it upon the reader. I do not need several pages about the history of a specific train track or the mines, if it’s not relevant to the plot. The juiciest part of the story with the kidnapping didn’t get enough attention, in my opinion. I will say that someone who went to Smith, the chapter on Smith’s was nice. I could appreciate some of the other references.
