I love this book. The main character is great and the magic system is amazing.

Very fun book! Sabriel is a nice character to spend time with as she has a bit of a coming of age over the course of the novel while also fighting the dead and trying to pull off a rescue mission. The worldbuilding is interesting, and I enjoyed how Nix described Sabriel's bells. And I really appreciated the subtle romance between Sabriel and Touchstone, which was there but never took time away from the main adventure.

I haven't read high fantasy in quite some time, and this was a enjoyable reintroduction.

The world-building and magic system were especially well-done-- highly original, consistent, and just enough to whet the appetite to learn more in the next book. I appreciated that the descriptions (of setting and exposition) succinctly depicted what the reader needed to know to move the plot forward, but did not bog down the pace at any point (a too common occurence in fantasy novels). Overall, a nice balance between simplicity, orignality, and cohesion.

The characters themselves served as adequately realized to move through the richly imagined world and carry out the plot, but did not themselves jump off the page. I would have appreciated deeper characterization, generally-- character development doesn't drive the story, but also doesn't detract from it. I did quite like Mogget however, and he was a joy in any scene he appeared with a lazy sardonic quip.

I'm excited to continue the story, but am not compelled to begin immediately.

The characters were a bit flat for me but I loved the world & the magic system. The latter half of the book was so much better than the first half. Couldn’t put it down after that!

Worth reading just to listen to Tim Curry narrate the audiobook! This is a much more sophisticated book than the Seventh Tower Series and handles death in such a magical way. I love how intelligent the text is (or maybe Tim Curry made it feel that way) and really felt immersed in the world Garth Nix created. Can't wait for more voices and to see where the story goes!
