I think maybe if I was younger I would have liked this more lol. It was okay. Didn’t really understand the magic system and the only character I really liked was the grumpy cat.

I read this book a few years ago, and I just listened to the audio. I have mixed feelings about it. The fabulous Tim Curry reads it, and he's really, really good. At almost everything. But I found most of his girl voices to be distracting in their non-girliness. They just sounded kinda nasally. But still, he did a great job overall, and the book itself is just as fascinating as I remember.

Probably my favorite fantasy series after LotR. The magic system is unique and its structure and the world building lore is revealed slowly, always keeping the reader looking forward to the next interesting thing. You discover the world alongside the characters. Character personalities felt very human and well developed.
I think sabriel should have stayed dead though. Reviving her right at the end felt like a bit of a cop out

A wonderful book narrated expertly by Tim Curry whose voices and inflections felt true to the characters within.

This was a lot of fun to read! I will say, I was incredibly confused and frustrated by the magic system for the majority of the book. But once I figured it out, I started to enjoy it a lot more. Mogget was definitely my favorite character, by far. I felt like he was the most interesting character because he had the most complex story. Also, he’s a cat, so that’s an automatic win for me.
SpoilerI personally choose to believe that Nix was being a little cheeky with this character, too. A giant, magical spirit that might want to kill people one day and then the next day they just want to sit and enjoy their company? Trapped in a cat’s body? Is that not just all cats in general? I think so.
Overall, I thought this was a great fantasy story. I think I would have been more obsessed with the story if I had read it when I was younger, though.
