Interesting enough to pick up book 2

- The story gets going perhaps too fast, like it's already book 3 in a series.
- there's not many moments of rest between crazy things happening
- the magic is cool and terrifying
- the ending is great and leaves me excited for more, but again, feels a bit rushed.

My favourite book of all time. I recommend this above all others. Things have eclipsed it since in technicality, but my god... Nothing will quite come close to the feeling I had when I read this for the first time, aged 11, crumpled up in the library at school. A masterstroke.

This book was an okay read. The magic is a type of necromancy; in the world, the dead refuse to stay dead and the Abhorsen, the main character's father, is responsible for keeping the dead from returning to the world of the living. He teaches his daughter Sabriel, the main character, about this magic and the adventure begins when her father goes missing. I really enjoyed the magic system and the world built around it; these were what initially what pulled me into the book and the reason that I kept on reading. Nix's writing and descriptions were good as well. But the book was just too slow. The plot dragged on as I waited for the next burst of action, only to find the bit of action anti-climactic. The characters were likable, though the romance felt a bit sudden. I wish there was more action and plot development. The unique magic system and world are what kept me reading despite the slow pace, though I debated many times just putting it down. I may try to read the sequel, hopefully it has a faster pace because I did like the premise of the story. Overall, a decent story with interesting elements that I really enjoyed, but too slow for my taste.

DNF… maybe I’ll come back later, but just couldn’t get into it.
