Re-read on audio. One of the books that made me fall in love with fantasy as a young reader. No less magical in my 20s
Sabriel's father is missing, she will have to cross into the Old Kingdom and death in order to find him.
I have read this so many times but never listened to the audio book. It gets 5 stars from me- partly for teenage nostalgia but also because I really looked forward to listening to this even though I knew how the story ended!
This is a slightly dark, slightly gory story brought more alive by a narrator. The magic is both hard and soft - bells, music and runes (Garth Nix has said he was inspired by "bell book and candle"). The world building is phenomenal, though occasionally cliché (but this also came out in the 90's so perhaps less cliché for that time). I quite enjoy that Sabriel is relatively good at everything at school but comes to make mistakes in the real world - very interesting to also see her transition over the course of the book to rather reluctant heroine to Abhorsen.

It was fine. Might resonate more with the younger crowd.

Interesting setting but doesn't shine particularly strongly in any area. Decent read.
Strong female characters, lots of magic and a compelling story line. Plus Mogget. I'm not good at writing long reviews without spoilers so that's all I am going to say. TW/CW: death.
WOW WOW WOW. Recommended by a friend and so glad I picked it up fast. As a sucker for fantasy/scifi with a "special snowflake" protagonist, I couldn't put this one down. Reminded me a lot of the Kingkiller chronicles, The Martian, and Ready Player One. Immediately had to pick up the second book.
Good coherent story, strong female mc, cool worldbuilding, just not the style of voice i like
