Interesting and sympathetic characters with a fast paced plot. I liked the way the demon and his profits were depicted.

A phenomenal book!

The first scene in the pawn shop felt like I was reading a scene from Are You Afraid of The Dark? or Goosebumps. The strange, claustrophobic atmosphere was so well done. Same vibes for the epilogue with Gabby. Fantastic work!

There is something to be said about media where supernatural demonic beings are responsible for the systemic issues our society has. At its core, despite the behavior of the characters when they are no longer afraid of the consequences of their actions, this book runs on the belief that people are inherently good. It seems like the reason why the many characters behave so aggressively and violently is because of Zazel. Or maybe, Zazel acts as a scapegoat to their behavior.
Anyone with a heart and any sense of compassion would look at the state of the world and wonder how and why we all ended up in this nightmare. A demon like Zazel, who thrives on chaos and death and suffering, having possessed many souls would be a reason for why this world is this way. An outside force that is beyond our control is more comforting than the truth. The truth being that power, imperialism, white supremacy, etc has very deep roots in American history and its foundations; and dismantling this oppressive system is not as simple as performing an exorcism.

At the same time, Cade's wish isn't all a horrible consequence. Like Skinner said, the tenants of Jacobs Court no longer feared him, so they began to stand up to him. This is ultimately a good thing, fearlessness as a destruction of the suffering brought on by Skinner.
Eddie from the pawn shop says that the store caters to the most evil, and maybe it may seem that way, but could it possibly be it caters to the most desperate? Or it could be both. People desperate for power can be a ruthless, terrible thing.
