Reading this series feels like watching episodes of a fun, lighthearted show, until, of course, you reach the last episode, the season finale, and it hits you. You’ve grown attached to these characters, you’ve laughed and cheered with them, and suddenly you realize there’s no way everyone is going to get their happy ending. Leviathan delivers that bittersweet punch perfectly. The author waited until the perfect moment to start using all that affection we’ve built for these characters, throw them into situations with incredibly high stakes, and make us suffer right along with them. It completely caught me off guard (that means that yes, I cried like a baby, which I hadn’t thought possible for this series).

What a conclusion, picking right up from where the previous book takes place this one is much faster pace to the end. Tackling all sorts of revelant subjects still to today. And again the realisim of the science-fiction is absoluetly incredible. Lending a wonderful sense of realism to the world.

A great ending (?) for the series, all the biggest plots are closed nicely while a lot of smaller ones are left open for our imagination.

The real problem is...what the hell I'm going to read now?

A step up from the previous book. Good story arc wrap-up. Not going to say much more to avoid spoilers.
I will say that a lot of stuff in this and the previous book were telegraphed well in advance. I knew what was going to turn out to be a big reveal at least several pages early, in one or two cases basically as soon as a scene started I pretty much knew where this was heading. In some cases due to stuff mentioned in previous books. Some concepts are introduced with a heavy hand, bad enough that as soon as I read it, I think "plot point, this will be relevant eventually."

But anyway it doesn't matter, this is space opera and is more than a little corny, but it's almost supposed to be like that, and it's fun.

This is the eleventh and (at least as yet) final book in the Lost Fleet adventures of John Geary. I've devoured all eleven books in five weeks. They aren't high art, but they exactly suited my mood: military science fiction that absorbed me, where I could root for the indisputably good hero in an uncomplicated, uncritical way. The book that had the most impact on me was the opening volume, Dauntless, because at that point Campbell's superb space battles were new to me. But I enjoyed each book, particularly the aforementioned space battles and the various aliens. Spoilers ahead....
SpoilerThis final book brought the main plot to a satisfying conclusion and offered several nice elements along the way, such as the unexpected use of poetry. While I would have appreciated an extra few pages of wind-down after the climax, that is a small gripe.
I'm going to bump up my 3 1/2 stars to 4 stars in gratitude for the entertainment the series afforded me.

About my reviews: I try to review every book I read, including those that I don't end up enjoying. The reviews are not scholarly, but just indicate my reaction as a reader, reading being my addiction. I am miserly with 5-star reviews; 4 stars means I liked a book very much; 3 stars means I liked it; 2 stars means I didn't like it (though often the 2-star books are very popular with other readers and/or are by authors whose other work I've loved).

This is a great series. Love Jack. The differences between someone who came from a different era and changes the world.
