Anyone who thinks they will like this book will like this book. It's as dry as the title makes it out to be, yet certainly informative and oddly endearing. Not terribly long either, so the dry part is bearable. I just wish Coolidge talked more about his political philosophies.

Reread and loved it more than ever. Eloquently written but very approachable.

His integrity and humility strike me. He was also confident. He was economically conservative and a strong leader. He was practical and peace-making. And he’s the kind of person that might have never been elected if he hadn’t been the Vice President of a president who died in office.

His childhood is fascinating, and I love the development. A love of learning. A love of family. A love of values. A lot of simplicity.

His education and readings are interesting, and they certainly informed his future views. The professors and teachers and instructors.. and a self-propelled will to learn.

His own life was a model of simplicity as well. He lived within his means and did not seek to impress or outperform others, as so many do in politics.

There is no dignity quite so impressive, and no independence quite so important, as living within your means. In our country a small income is usually less embarrassing than the possession of a large one. -Calvin Coolidge

He loved the law and believed in natural rights and values. Studying it, consulting it, interpreting it; rather than randomly deciding as so many are accustomed to

Thinking I knew what to do, I consulted the law as is my custom. -Calvin Coolidge

It is a wonder he rose through the ranks as confident and quiet as he was. He did not actively seek power for power’s sake, a rare trait in this day and age.

It is much better not to press a candidacy too much, but to let it develop on its own merits without artificial stimulation. If the people want a man they will nominate him, if they do not want him he had best let the nomination go to another. - Calvin Coolidge

There is only one form of political strategy in which I have any confidence, and that is to try to do the right thing and sometimes be able to succeed. -Calvin Coolidge

And then his actual policies. Can I say impressive?

It is much more important to kill bad bills than pass good ones. -Calvin Coolidge

Confident. Calm. Collected. Principled.

He did not speak poorly of those he had poor relations with, conflicting views, or personal strifes. Rather, he recognized them as necessary and found common ground.

Regardless, his commitments were to simplicity. To spending less and saving more. To cutting taxes along with cutting the budget. Those two always have to go hand in hand. It stimulates the economy without increasing the deficit or inflation.

Common sense economics and forward thinking. My favorite President of all time.

And? He cut the deficit by more than any other President in history.. and balanced the budget every year while President, only to have Hoover and FDR turn it all around with big-gov spending programs to launch out of the Depression.

Either way - a lasting impression on the United States of America. Kudos to Silent Cal.

An understated gem. I visited President Coolidge's well-preserved homestead in Vermont recently, which led to my interest in learning more about him. He was wise, hard-working, pragmatic, and modest: traits that should be required of every White House occupant.

He lost a child while he was President. Although he only devoted a couple of pages to it, I could relate to the feelings he described.
