Despite the majority of this volume being focused on an okay arc, this volume gets 4 stars simply for including a fantastic Issue 31. I was stunned to see the hashtag #byeerica on Squirrel Girl's normal Twitter feed because I honestly don't keep up with comics news to avoid spoilers. Issue 31 is just a beautiful yet bittersweet farewell for Erica Henderson and her art style which helped to make Squirrel Girl one of my favorite comics to follow. Her successor has got some big shoes to fill.

I've been reading a bunch of books without writing reviews as I go. Sorry!

SG is still at the top of Marvel comics today. This volume deals largely with a small group of Surfer Bro scam artists. Also we get to see more of Loki being a fanboy of Nancy Whitehead, and an advanced planet of squirrels!

Good. So good! Nancy is a pet! Drax was so much fun. A poignant standalone issue! Not enough Brain Drain, but even so, so good!

SECRET CONFESSION THAT IS PROBABLY NOT SO SECRET SINCE THIS IS A PUBLIC REVIEW AND ALSO I FEEL LIKE I MAY HAVE CONFESSED THIS ALREADY BUT HERE GOES: I don't read the script at the bottom of the pages anymore. I am old which means my eyes are old and the tiny text involves too much refocusing and there's not always enough contrast in the text/background colors so it was starting to become A Thing so I just decided to ignore the text and it's fine.

I will admit to going a long time between Squirrel Girl readings, so the tone was once again fresh and new. Highly recommend this method if you ever feel it's gotten a little same-y. Maybe because of that, or maybe because it was good, I loved My Best Friend's Squirrel—the Silver Surfer storyline felt a little long but it was fun so I didn't care. The last story, with the time futzing, reminded me of a Farscape plot that I liked, so that was nice and I approve. It was also very sweet.

I'm a little worried about the artist switchover that's coming in the next volume because I am THE PICKIEST and I've loved Henderson's artwork but let's be real, I'm not about to drop the title over that.

(four and a half stars)

Oh man, I was ready to give this volume 4 stars, but then I read the last story and I cried like a baby. In a good way, mostly.

Seriously y'all, Squirrel Girl #31 is possibly Ryan North's best work yet. It is clever and epic and heartfelt in a way that recalls the wackier variety of iconic ST:TNG episode. You know, the ones where quoting a single line of dialogue causes the Trekkies in the room to go into a five-minute paroxysm of feels, punctuated by unintelligible exclamations and guttural noises of assent. Star Trek Discovery folks - I haven't been watching your show, but you should hire Ryan North to write some episodes!

Of course, much of the power of this issue is due to Erica Henderson's fantabulous art. She NAILS this story; it's just lovely. I'm mildly devastated that she's no longer drawing this comic, but luckily I realized I accidentally skipped Volume 6, so there is still sweet Henderson art waiting for me. And I'm excited to see what the next artist brings to the comic (as long as what they bring includes "fashionable outfits for Doreen and Nancy" and "Squirrel Girl's powerful, muscular thighs.")
