A werewolf book that finds that perfect balance between true horror and true humanity.

This short book is not for the faint of heart - it really dives right into some disturbing content, but finds a good balance between shocking scenes and hopeful ones. The characters were well-balanced in terms of their personalities. They were shown well and quick, popping off the pages and standing out on their own. There was no blending of who was who, which is incredible that this could be shown in such a small book.
While the werewolves of the tale were awful and the humans had survival skills and a deep desire to survive the massacre brought down upon Old Hollow, there was still some humanity peppered into the werewolves. I found this particularly interesting. Whenever the backstory of a wolf was brought up, I found myself understanding them to a degree.
As I neared the ending I thought it was going one way - and it went a totally different direction without being left-field. In fact, everything was placed in the right spots for the perfect set up and I was pleasantly surprised with how it went.
For fans of 30 Days of Night seeking a werewolf tale that is truly terrifying.

I would like to thank Jeremy so much for sending me a copy of his book Old Hollow and allowing me to read and review his work!

Set it in small town, rural West Virginia, Old Hollow's opening immediately brought me back to my childhood in Terra Alta. Nothing but trees, and crisp air, and the wildlife walks right up to your door. I have no doubt of the solace and comfort Asher found in the mountains. I long for and miss it very much myself. For those reader who have not had the luxury of knowing what that feels like first hand, Megargee paints a beautiful picture through expressive and detailed language.

Asher, the lone man on the mountain, like everyone who lives on the outskirts, must come into town to get those human provisions you can't get from the earth. On his way back into the town of Old Hollow, he finds more and more evidence of something terrible. The reader finds out that the inhabitants of the town has been slaughtered by a terrible band of lycanthrope miscreants. Megagree leaves no shortage of gore and violence to excite the jaded mind.

As we meet our remaining survivors and cast of villains, we also learn Megagree's brand of werewolf lore and I must say, I am enthralled. I did have a quite a bit of fun with Old Hollow but I also had a few issues.

I felt it was very description heavy, and could get quite repetitious. I started to drown in the finite details and I lost some of what was going on. I also thought that the descriptors got in the way of some structural things, like the concept of time, or some the actions of the characters. The ever changing point of view started to give me whiplash, as I felt some characters definitely did not need the spotlight. Had we been able to give the story from maybe 3 views max, it would have flowed a little better for me.

A little polishing, and this could be great. If you are into werewolves and don't want it to be something you have seen before, you should absolutely give this a chance.
