For the first two-thirds of the book I found myself really frustrated with the characters. I'm at a point where the whole "I'll just keep this one little thing a secret from my loved one until the right moment, except it never is the right moment, and then whoops, they find out and DISASTER" thing just drives me mad. It just never works. Just be honest. Just tell your Just tell your Just tell them.
But then there wouldn't be much of a story, I suppose.
Once we got through some of the stubborn tween behavior combined with stubborn elder behavior, there were some good bits where Marinka really shone. The title character was pretty awesome, too. I mean, if there's a house with chicken legs, I'm in. Combine that with a Baba Yaga death doula and I'm all in. So I wanted to like it from the get-go, and even though it was a bit of a struggle I'm glad I stuck with it, because the last third or so was the best bit.
Plus, that cover is amazing.

The first almost 200 pages took 12 days, because the protagonist is just SO annoying. She also doesn't deserve the ending. And all just because they can't communicate??? But House is a nice.
This was such a fun read! I loved everything about this book, from the way Marinka's character is written down to the ways in which she experiences her emotions. I could really feel how lost and afraid Marinka was about not having control over her destiny. They way in which the writing made me feel like I was a 12 year old again was wonderful. I think there were definitely some important messages in this book about friendship and family that were so eloquently woven into the work. Overall, this was such a wonderful and exciting read! Also the basing off of the Baba Yaga story was excellently done! 5 Stars!
